Beginner's Guide to RepHaus Gym, Sturminster Newton

RepHaus is an independent 24/7 gym in Sturminster Newton, and it's a good place to start training even if you've never set foot in a gym. It's smaller and less intimidating than a big chain, you can train at times that suit you, and you're not lost in a crowd. Here's what to expect, and how to make your first few visits easy.

What RepHaus is

RepHaus is an independently run gym, not part of a national chain. It's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so early starts, late finishes and shift workers are all covered.

What's inside

High-quality machines, free weights, dedicated strength and cardio areas, and functional training space.

For a beginner, the important point is that everything you need to get stronger and fitter is there. You don't need a huge gym with rows of identical machines. You need a few good bits of kit and someone to show you how to use them.

Why 24/7 suits beginners

The biggest reason people stop going to the gym isn't motivation. It's timing. Work runs late, the kids need picking up, and the gym's closed by the time you're free.

A 24/7 gym removes that excuse. It also means you can choose quieter times while you're building confidence.

Your first visit: a simple plan

  1. Go at a quiet time. Fewer people means less pressure.

  2. Walk the room first. Find the water, toilets and changing area, and see where the kit is.

  3. Keep it short. 30 to 40 minutes is plenty. Ten minutes on a bike or treadmill, then three or four simple exercises.

  4. Use machines before free weights. Machines guide the movement, which makes them easier to learn on.

  5. Leave wanting more. Finishing fresh makes you far more likely to come back.

Gym etiquette nobody tells you

  • Wipe down equipment after using it.

  • Put weights back where you found them.

  • If someone's using something you need, ask if you can "work in" between their sets. Most people are happy to share.

  • Headphones in usually means someone is focused, not unfriendly.

  • Everyone was a beginner once. Nobody is watching you as closely as you think.

When a personal trainer helps

You can absolutely start on your own. But many beginners at a 24/7 gym hit the same wall around week three: they've done the same few machines, they're not sure what's next, and motivation drops.

That's where I come in. I'm based at RepHaus, so sessions happen in the gym you already use. We build a plan around your goals and your week, and I teach you to use the kit properly so you can train confidently between sessions too.
